Dirty Linen Night

July 31, 2012
It's no secret that I love a birthday. Any reason to eat cake, have drinks, pay a stripper from my sofa, and cry is a sure fine way to celebrate. The French Quarter is sitting on the edge of its less-than-perfect seat in anticipation of August 11, 2012. Why are we perched on such a precarious place? That's easy. It's Dirty Linen, of course. One of the biggest and most celebrated days up and down Royal Street will celebrate its 11th birthday this year. As with all birthdays, the crew promises a bunch of fun new things along with the expected old stuff, too.

Heart of The Quarter - The Fabulous Faces of Nikki McCoy

July 31, 2012
Whenever I think of strong women, I get an image of Tootsie in my head, then I refocus and suddenly standing before me are my lady heroes. You know them as Dorothy and Scarlett; I know them as the founders of the "tough bitch club". We will call that the TBC so I don't have to keep saying "bitch" over, and over, which will undoubtedly upset my editor Donna (who btw is the TBC member with the best shoes). Anyway, these ladies made lemons out of lemonade, took the bad and made it good, and stared straight ahead and on the track.

Evoking the Spirits of the Vieux Carre

July 31, 2012
In the land of voodoo, vampires, and witchcraft, it's no wonder that America's most haunted city is rife with tales of restless spirits. Our turbulent history is cloaked in a shroud of supernatural intrigue and mystery that makes it a ghost hunter's dream come true!

Criollo Cocktail

July 31, 2012
This recipe has been adapted from the Bar Florida Cocktail book from the Florida Hotel in Havana, Cuba.

To pay tribute to New Orleans and to keep with the theme of using local products in our restaurant, Criollo Restaurant & Lounge, we are featuring Old New Orleans Cajun Spice Rum and, when available, locally grown citrus from Southern Louisiana.

The term Criollo is Spanish for Creole.

1 ¼ oz. Old New Orleans Cajun Spice Rum
¼ oz. Agave Nectar
3 wedges Fresh Lemon
3 - 4 Fresh Mint Leaves
4 oz. Club Soda

Little Freddie King, New Orleans' Monarch of the Blues

July 31, 2012
The official highway welcome signs in Mississippi say "Welcome to Mississippi, Birthplace of American Music," and few people typify that unique American music form called the Blues quite like Little Freddie King, who New Orleans now claims as its own.

"Tastefully Done" - Vieux Carre's Newest Restaurants - Fall 2012

July 31, 2012
The French Quarter has long been epicenter of New Orleans' historic restaurants. Some of the city's (and the country's) oldest, most revered restaurants are scattered along the cobblestone streets of the Vieux Carre. Nestled near these bastions of New Orleans dining, a batch of new restaurants has joined the culinary gumbo of the French Quarter. Here's a look at the latest.

Red Lights in the French Quarter

July 31, 2012
Although many people have heard of the infamous vice district called Storyville, established in 1898 by an act of the New Orleans City Council, few realize that it was not in the French Quarter. Storyville was in fact just outside the French Quarter, in the area bounded by Basin, Customhouse (as Iberville was once called), Robertson and St. Louis Streets. Still, the French Quarter has seen more than its share of prostitution throughout its history - beginning long before the creation of Storyville and continuing long after the district's official closing in 1917.

Monster Talent - Artist David Harouni

Frankenstein might not have been the cutest guy at the bar, and while the 'morning after' might involve washing some green out of your Laura Ashley pillow cases, it's his inner vulnerability and good heart under all that green stuff that makes him, well, irresistible. And, while a date with The Wolfman might not be great for your Scalamandre drapes, it's his romantic background story that could make you look past the furry face and attachment to sniffing our 2(x) ist underwear. Oh, and what about the hot guy living under interstate with half a face and the great abs and silky cape?
