New Orleans Storyville Museum
1010 Conti St.

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the captivating history and storied past at the New Orleans Storyville Museum with over 7,000 square feet of immersive exhibits dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of our historic city and its notorious Red-Light District known as Storyville.

Unveil the compelling story of Storyville which reigned from 1897 to 1917 as the largest and most ostentatious red-light district the country has ever seen. A "directory of pleasure" known as the Blue Book was printed and listed madams, their brothels and hundreds of prostitutes along with full-page advertisements for restaurants, saloons, billiard halls, champagne, liquor, beer, wine, cigars, jewelry, pawn shops, lawyers, druggists and supposed VD cures.

Among the many fascinating exhibits, guests will walk the streets of Storyville and visit the ghosts of an old brothel. Starting at Storyville's train station, guests can take a stroll through the re-created streets of old Storyville as captured in original hand-painted life-size murals of the district’s streetscape. They will experience the life of working in a “sex crib” at the turn of the century and understand the culture of early New Orleans and the birth of jazz.

One can view several vintage "peep show" machines from the early 1900s, stereoscopic slides and a short movie on antique early motion picture machines from early peep show arcades. Be sure to sneak a peek! You can also watch a video of a bartender preparing the legendary “Green Fairy” concoction. Absinthe, a popular drink during the early days of Storyville, was banned in 1912 due to its hallucinogenic effects.

Around 1912, Ernest J. Bellocq, a commercial photographer by trade, photographed women who live and work in Storyville. Today, Bellocq’s Storyville photos are internationally recognized for their haunting beauty and artistry; the museum has a number of rare original Bellocq photographs on display.
