The New Orleans Jazz Museum teamed up with Le 360 Paris Music Factory in bringing New Orleans Jazz to Paris, France for a jointly produced Festival Jazz Nouvelle-Orléans. The festival featured performances by premier New Orleans musicians, James Andrews, George Brown and Christie Jourdain of the Original Pinettes Brass Band and a traditional second line. The artists served as cultural ambassadors of the New Orleans music tradition, teaching master classes and sharing our unique culture with the Parisian audience.

Since its founding in 1718 by French explorers, New Orleans has remained proud of its French heritage. La Nouvelle-Orléans was named in honor of Philip II, Duke of Orleans, who served as Regent of the Kingdom of France until young Louis XV could take the helm of the throne. Although the city was under Spanish control for much of the 1700s, it held tight to its French legacy, which remains evident in beaucoup aspects of New Orleans culture, including Mardi Gras (French for Fat Tuesday), jazz funerals and of course its world-renowned cuisine.

’Tis the season for feeling thankful and festive! What better way to kick up our heels than to get out of the house and do a little shopping while treating ourselves special? One of my merrymaking holiday traditions is to shop with my naughty and nice girlfriends in the Quarter, stopping to sip a few cocktails that we refer to as “jingle juice” along the way to add extra cheer. Not just the usual eggnog or mulled wine, because the holidays are synonymous with celebration. Christmas trees, Kwanza kinara, and Hanukkah menorahs aren’t the only thing getting lit this season!

Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights began in the French Quarter in 1945 when Andrew Bevolo, Sr., an Italian immigrant, revolutionized the production of gas lamps. He honed his metalworking skills while working for historic manufacturing companies including Ford, Sikorsky and Higgins. His master craftsmanship and artistic style were the perfect complement when paired with the talents of renowned architect, A. Hays Town. Together, utilizing a hand-riveting technique rather than brittle soldered joints, they created what would eventually become known as the original French Quarter Lamp.

Her artistic journey began at the age of 18 when she embarked on a self-taught exploration of various mediums. Initially, she expressed her creativity by painting on silk, a venture that sustained her livelihood. Throughout the years, Jacopin has remained dedicated to her craft by continuously experimenting with different artistic mediums and techniques.

Directing Jazz at Preservation Hall

No visit to New Orleans is complete without a visit to hear traditional jazz at internationally renowned Preservation Hall. Founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe, Preservation Hall sought to give a home to traditional New Orleans music at a time when it was surviving primarily on neighborhood streets. Integrated from its very inception during the Jim Crow South, the Hall was always a place for black and white musicians to play together for black and white audiences.
