Love on the Line: Charles & Julia Brings Romance and Rooftop Cocktails to New Orleans

June 01, 2026
New Orleans has always been a city built on stories that are romantic, mysterious, and unforgettable. Now, one of the city’s newest destinations is turning that spirit into an experience all its own. Charles & Julia recently opened on St. Charles Avenue with a concept that feels both cinematic and deeply rooted in the city’s timeless charm.

Created by Latter Hospitality Group, the team behind beloved New Orleans favorites like Tujague’s, The Bower, and Birdy’s, Charles & Julia is more than a cocktail bar. It’s a two-level destination built around a fictional love story: Charles and Julia, a couple who first met on a New Orleans streetcar and bonded over their shared love of travel, food, and hospitality. Their imagined romance becomes the inspiration for a venue designed to encourage lingering evenings, meaningful conversations, and a little escape from the ordinary.

Located at Hotel Perle, 757 St. Charles Avenue, in the heart of the Warehouse District, Charles & Julia offers two completely different moods under one roof. Downstairs, guests step into an intimate cocktail salon filled with warm woods, soft lighting, and layered textures. The setting feels polished yet relaxed, ideal for a date night, a slow predinner drink, or an evening spent sharing plates with friends.

The menu downstairs, created by corporate chef Marcus Woodham and executed by chef de cuisine Ubolratana “Aum” Wipop, is built around refined small plates that invite sharing. It begins with table-friendly staples like Bellegarde olive and fennel batard, focaccia with smoked tallow butter, and thoughtfully composed cheese and charcuterie boards.

Fresh, bright dishes include Hamachi Crudo with salted cucumber, green tomato, lemongrass, and shrimp paste vinaigrette, and a colorful heirloom-cherry-tomato salad layered with blueberry, basil, labneh, and pistachio butter. For something indulgent, a Key West–style lobster roll arrives on brioche with lime aioli, celery, cilantro, and Old Bay, with the option to elevate the offerings even further with caviar.

The richer hot plates are where the kitchen really leans into comfort and creativity. Scallops with creamed corn, pancetta, and smoked trout roe strike a balance between Southern richness and coastal elegance. Carbonara Crab Gnocchi combines sweet crab with pancetta, peas, and egg yolk for a luxurious twist on a classic. There’s also Baked Lobster “Escargot,” Mushroom Bolognese stuffed shells, and Pavé Potato topped with caviar and truffled crème fraîche—each dish designed to feel celebratory without being overly formal.

Just as important as the food is the cocktail program, led by beverage director Allison O’Keefer. Downstairs, the drinks move between light and floral to dark and spirit forward. The CBD Spritz blends vodka, strawberry, basil, elderflower, lime, and sparkling wine for a refreshing start to the evening, while Sage Advice introduces gin, sugar snap pea, sage, and Velvet Falernum for something herbaceous and unexpected.

For bourbon lovers, Peachy Keen, Jelly Bean offers peach, pistachio, lemon, and thyme, while The Jabberwocky layers bourbon with walnut, cinnamon, cacao, and Luxardo Maraschino for a deeper, moodier sip. Two classic cocktails also anchor the menu as symbolic tributes to the fictional couple: the Vesper, representing Charles in 1953, and the Daiquiri, honoring Julia in 1898.

Then there’s the rooftop. Upstairs, Charles & Julia transforms entirely. Designed by Anna Nicole Interiors with inspiration drawn from Sicily, the rooftop terrace feels like a hidden European garden suspended above the city. Surrounded by greenery and skyline views, it offers a vacation-like atmosphere that feels far removed from the bustle below.

This is where warm-weather drinking takes center stage. The Summer Crush combines tequila, watermelon, fig-balsamic, Acqua di Cedro, and lime for a refreshing seasonal favorite. Génépy From the Block mixes blanco tequila, coconut, lemongrass, lemon, and soda for something bright and tropical, while Sombre Verde introduces tobalá, tarragon, fino sherry, and Dolin Blanc for a more adventurous palate. And for classic New Orleans summer afternoons, few things can compete with Charles & Julia’s Frozen Paloma enjoyed at sunset above St. Charles Avenue.

What makes this place stand out isn’t just the rooftop views or inventive cocktails; it’s the feeling of discovery. Rather than announcing itself loudly, the space invites guests to settle in and uncover it slowly. One level offers intimacy and candlelit conversation; the other delivers open-air freedom and sweeping views under the stars.

In a city where hospitality is an art form, Charles & Julia feels like a natural addition to New Orleans nightlife. It captures the romance people come here searching for, the kind found in streetcar rides, twilight cocktails, and the simple pleasure of staying out just a little longer than planned. For visitors looking for a fresh new reason to toast the city, Charles & Julia may be the perfect place to begin.
