Spring 2019

LIVE!

February 05, 2019
There may not be any other city in the world with as much lively “goings on” as New Orleans’ first quarter calendar. The Carnival season, and the nightly, live entertainment continues with jazz and other performances from talented musicians and entertainers. The entire first quarter is busy every year, yet the 2019 season is particularly noteworthy.

It's Party Time

February 05, 2019
The “Greatest Show on Earth,” otherwise known as Mardi Gras, will be celebrated this year on Tuesday, March 5th. The biggest free party thrown in North America always falls 46 days before Easter and is the city's most popular attraction. Visitors and locals alike love the party atmosphere, the crowds, costumed revelers, and the esprit de corps.

Samba Your Way Into Carnival

February 05, 2019
As an avid traveler, I have many places I want to visit on my bucket list. Among them, I have always wanted to spend Carnival in the largely Catholic city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rio is home to the world's most famous Carnival celebration and what many people consider to be the world's biggest and best party. The basis of Rio's Carnival is the samba school, which is a social club named after the famous Brazilian dance. Samba schools are based in different neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro, and rivalry among them is fierce.

"Killing 'em Dead with Needle and Thread" A Brief History of Mardi Gras Indians

February 05, 2019
One beautiful Fat Tuesday, my dear native New Orleanian friend, Kyle, invited me to take a walk a few blocks from Bourbon Street to the historic Tremé neighborhood, America’s oldest community of free black people, to catch a glimpse of a tradition that he described as “uniquely New Orleans but nothing like the booze and beads of the French Quarter.” Intrigued, I decided to take a stroll across Rampart Street to the Backstreet Cultural Museum at 1116 Henriette Delille Street. There, in the shadow of St.

There’s Something About Being Anonymous

As a native New Orleanian, my favorite tradition to share with family and friends is the annual Mardi Gras Mask Market, a four-day family-friendly festival and a unique specialized craft fair showcasing artisan mask makers. The days, as one may expect, are filled with live local music, usually involving brass bands, local legends, and Mardi Gras Indian groups, food, drink, and Bacchanalian revelry.

Dining Diversity

February 05, 2019
New Orleans has always been celebrated in the food world for its French-inspired Creole and Cajun culinary heritage. However, food influences that are the main go-to for locals’ and for the visiting populace are noted as a gumbo of a wide range of different cuisine cultures. Native Americans, diverse settlers, slaves, travelers passing through, and others who have been here have all contributed to the evolving creations of the city’s cookery.

Springtime for Sipping!

February 05, 2019
Coming in on the wings of gentle breezes, sunny skies, and budding flowers, the sweet song of spring follows winter, bringing with it a brighter, lighter season in so many ways. Store those leather jackets and heavy wool coats– blankets, too--away and pull out the shorts and more cheery, lightweight cotton clothing.

A New Face for the Game

Makeovers are one of my favorite things. Even when we don’t need them, they provide us with the opportunity to see just how far we can push ourselves and our achievements. I have had blue hair, I have had red hair, I have had no hair; each time I reinvented myself, my own confidence grew knowing that I was one step closer to finding the me that was the best.

Artist Emilie Rhys has recently transformed her French Quarter gallery into a new and exciting show place for some of the city’s most important and influential artwork.

Hammer Time

February 05, 2019
When I finally realized that “satire” wasn’t a backup dancer for MC Hammer I was thrilled!

Anything to do with poking a little fun at things in this life is fine by me. I love to throw the proverbial “shade” if you know what I mean. Discreetly of course. You will never even know that I said anything about you. That’s just how I like people to talk about me too, securely across the room behind my back for their own safety.
