Directing Jazz at Preservation Hall

August 23, 2023
No visit to New Orleans is complete without a visit to hear traditional jazz at internationally renowned Preservation Hall. Founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe, Preservation Hall sought to give a home to traditional New Orleans music at a time when it was surviving primarily on neighborhood streets. Integrated from its very inception during the Jim Crow South, the Hall was always a place for black and white musicians to play together for black and white audiences.

Things That Go Bump in the Night!

August 23, 2023
Since New Orleans was founded in 1718, the city has always had an allure or mystique surrounding it. From its development by the French through its period of Spanish control, then briefly back to the French before being acquired by the United States with the Louisiana Purchase, the Crescent City has indeed become a kaleidoscope of stories, folklore and legends. Even before it was founded as a city, the Big Easy which was then known as Bulbancha ("place of many tongues” in Choctaw) was an important trading hub by the Native Americans.

Just to the west of our airport, Louisiana's River Parishes is a strip of land about 120 miles long along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The area is known for its unique history, agriculture, cuisine and ecosystems. Influences from Germans, Acadians or “Cajuns,” French, Spanish, Native Americans and enslaved Africans blend together to create a regional culture, unique even to Louisiana.

Crème de la Crème - Magnificent Meals with Superb Libations

August 23, 2023
There is a certain comfort I feel when my friends and I go to our favorite local bars to imbibe in perfectly balanced, well-executed cocktails. The camaraderie is enjoyable, and we often meet other like-minded folks to chat with and savor the moment and the joie de vivre we celebrate here in New Orleans. There are very few things I enjoy doing more but I have to say that if that bar happens to have excellent food as well, all is right in the world.

Music Inspires Art

August 23, 2023
Emilie Rhys is a third-generation artist who specializes in depicting New Orleans musicians, French Quarter rooftop views, and other delightful subjects. In her serene French Quarter gallery, Scene by Rhys Fine Art at 1036 Royal St., she paints portraits on canvas and smaller images on copper plates. Often spotted at music venues, she spontaneously draws pen and ink drawings of musicians in performance with remarkable accuracy. Her renderings capture the immediacy of improvisation. The only thing she enjoys more than hearing music is to “draw the music” while it’s playing.
