Bywater Baby

In school, I hated math. The only math I enjoyed was counting the hours until history class. History was my ace because, as the name says, it’s a story…a true story about all the things that happened to make where we are and what we are doing today so important and special. New Orleans is steeped in history that runs up the river to the Garden District and down the once canal that is now I-10 to Lakeview.

Founded in 1718, New Orleans has almost three centuries of French, Spanish, African, Native American, and Acadian history; our very rich and dark history is filled with violent deaths, which contribute to hauntings and paranormal activity. Legends of grisly murders, plundering pirates, voodoo spirits, and restless wanderers run rampant across the city.

Bursting at the Seams

In many communities the final notes of Spring are indicators that residents will be heading out for vacations to the beach or the mountains, and that social activities in the town will be taking a break or ceasing completely.

As is this town’s style, New Orleans does not zig or zag on the same schedule as everyone else. The pace of festivals and theatrical presentations, in fact, only increases during the onset of summer.

Beyond the Quarter

I love mayonnaise almost as much as Barry Manilow loves a weekend in New England.

I have never met a mayo I didn’t like, and I have never met a dish that didn’t benefit from knowing a spoonful of it. Mayo isn’t the only condiment my unsophisticated palette has warmed up to. In fact, I can’t imagine life without any of them: ketchup, mustard, sriracha, the Bywater! Wait, did I say the Bywater? Yes … yes, I did.

Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival

February 03, 2017
The Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival returns to the historic French Quarter for its 31st annual gathering to celebrate the genius of Tennessee Williams, who once called New Orleans his “spiritual home,” joined by contemporary artists who are as honest and unflinching in their examination of the human condition as the Festival’s patron playwright. Founded in 1986 by a group of cultural enthusiasts, the Festival has grown from a small gathering of 500 to a five-day literary and multi-cultural event, which sees 11,000+ seats filled yearly.
