Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights Illuminate New Orleans and Around the World

November 27, 2023
Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights began in the French Quarter in 1945 when Andrew Bevolo, Sr., an Italian immigrant, revolutionized the production of gas lamps. He honed his metalworking skills while working for historic manufacturing companies including Ford, Sikorsky and Higgins. His master craftsmanship and artistic style were the perfect complement when paired with the talents of renowned architect, A. Hays Town. Together, utilizing a hand-riveting technique rather than brittle soldered joints, they created what would eventually become known as the original French Quarter Lamp. Try taking a step through the French Quarter without catching a glimpse of this iconic elegant copper lamp, and you will find it simply cannot be done. Bevolo lanterns grace not only New Orleans Historic Landmarks such as The Cabildo, Jackson Square, Commander’s Palace, and Brennan’s Restaurant, they have also been sold to customers in all fifty states and over fifty countries.

Since 1945, Bevolo has been manufacturing the highest quality traditional, antique and custom-designed hand-made open-flame copper lanterns, known world-wide for their craftsmanship and attention to detail. By using the highest-grade materials, the most efficient, patented burners, the finest industry-standard techniques and highly skilled craftsmen, their lanterns shine above the rest and last for generations to come. Classic designs never go out of style and Bevelo is known around the world for its distinctive gas lanterns.

Bevolo is a fourth-generation family owned and operated business with four unique locations in the heart of the French Quarter. New Orleans was among the first in the country to have urban gas lighting, and you can still see its influence throughout the city, giving it a mysterious, alluring atmosphere that allows one to step back in time. Their showrooms capture this essence and are a memorable experience in themselves, showcasing a collection of vintage open-flame lanterns in an historic building.

A visit to the Royal Street showrooms and museum is a quintessential New Orleans experience like no other. Over forty open-flame lanterns adorn an exposed brick wall leading from the street to the romantic courtyard to the living museum in the heart of the French Quarter. Open for the public to enjoy, the Exchange Alley workshop is filled with memorabilia and original work tables illuminating the company’s fascinating history, as well as notes about Mr. Bevolo’s unique contributions to the industry. Talented coppersmiths working with the purest sheets of metal will be at work and happy to answer questions as they share their knowledge.

You can even rent this beautiful venue for private parties and special events! In an increasingly high-tech world, it is a rare treat to have access to such a charming and lovingly preserved piece of the Quarter’s cultural history. Bevolo offers a rich and warmly illuminated backdrop that can easily by transformed into the perfect space for corporate events, cocktail parties, seated dinners or intimate weddings. The venue provides two entrances, from Royal Street and Exchange Alley, as well as a romantic, interior courtyard. Through the courtyard, guests can enter the workshop filled with antique fixtures, old work tables, and vintage memorabilia. You can even arrange for Bevolo Coppersmiths to be on-site during your event, handcrafting lanterns for your guests to see history in the making.

From the most historically accurate to contemporary creations, there are hundreds of lighting styles to choose from. Of course, the original design is by far the most popular, but stainless steel and custom hand-welded yokes, brackets and mounts are also offered. Lanterns are handcrafted for each order in natural gas, propane or electric. Copper is their signature, but they also offer lanterns in stainless steel. The same goes for their vast array of interior lighting, presented in one of the shops that adjoins the main showroom. Chandeliers, sconces and antique courtyard accessories all reflect the same impeccable quality. Their other jewel box of a shop features a carefully curated display of vibrant mid-century modern pendants and lights. It’s a colorful departure from the traditional lanterns, but the love of craft and artistry is exactly the same. The collection of vintage Blenko and Murano hand-blown glass lamps, handmade shades, and one-of-a-kind finials celebrate the Bevolo love for detail and authenticity.

Fueled by a truly unique city, the flickering of the French Quarter lantern casts a romantic glow on a true and lasting art form. No other exterior lighting fixture on the market can hold a candle to the quality, patina and craftsmanship of a Bevolo light. The French Quarter lantern is elegant and timeless, and few things are as alluring as the burnished glow of a gas-lit flame. Not just made in America, these pieces are made right here in the heart of New Orleans. Visit the Bevolo Lighting Museum at 316 Royal St. on Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
