The Jazz Museum’s Global Bridge

November 27, 2023
The New Orleans Jazz Museum teamed up with Le 360 Paris Music Factory in bringing New Orleans Jazz to Paris, France for a jointly produced Festival Jazz Nouvelle-Orléans. The festival featured performances by premier New Orleans musicians, James Andrews, George Brown and Christie Jourdain of the Original Pinettes Brass Band and a traditional second line. The artists served as cultural ambassadors of the New Orleans music tradition, teaching master classes and sharing our unique culture with the Parisian audience. The festival also featured a screening of City of a Million Dreams, a documentary film by Jason Berry, as well as children’s workshops and a culinary program featuring Zella Palmer Director of Dillard University’s Ray Charles Program in African American Material Culture. Chef Serigne Mbaye of Dakar NOLA took over the 360 kitchen to bring the best of New Orleans cuisine to Paris.

The teams are currently planning an exciting second edition of the festival that will once again be held in Paris on Sept. 20–22, 2024, coinciding with Paris Fashion Week. The idea is to provide an alternative perspective on fashion: traditional, sustainable and ethical. This partnership further strengthens the Jazz Museum’s mission to function as a global bridge for students, artists, musicians, musical innovators and historians. The Goutte d'Or, where 360 Paris Music Factory is located, is historically a multicultural neighborhood with a strong African influence. In the streets surrounding the Square Léon, there are many traditional African and Creole clothing shops. The Jazz Museum’s team will be working with these artisans in preparation for a second line in the streets of Paris; they will make the flags, parasols and handkerchiefs for the parade.

The lineup for the second edition of the festival is set to once again feature iconic artists and culture bearers, including James Andrews, Big Chief Gerald Paige, and Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr. of The Wild Magnolias, as well as up-and-coming star Chantz Powell. Chantz is an international recording artist and powerhouse entertainer who is like Sammy Davis, Jr. combined with Usher. He is a vocalist, trumpet player, actor, composer and dancer extraordinaire who will perform and lead the tap-dancing masterclass. Powell states, “Music is the great unifier. An incredible force. Something that people who differ on everything and anything else can have in common.”

This growing interest in New Orleans music and culture among foreign audiences inspired the Jazz Museum to create the Jazz International initiative dedicated to bringing New Orleans arts and culture to countries all over the world. Encompassing a broad range of global partnerships spanning Europe, East Asia, Africa and Latin America, Jazz International fosters intercultural exchange and supports the cultural economy of New Orleans by showcasing the city’s rich jazz legacy and cultural heritage. Jazz International's mission encompasses music, educational programming, traveling exhibits, historical research and culinary programs. This initiative engages in diverse musical exchanges with their partner sites by both hosting musicians from around the world in New Orleans, as well as sending delegations of New Orleans culture bearers to destinations around the globe. From France to Hong Kong to the Dominican Republic, esteemed artists such as Herlin Riley, Dr. Michael White, James Andrews and Gregg Stafford have shared and educated global audiences about the music and culture of New Orleans.

Furthering its mission to foster cultural exchange, the museum created the New Orleans Jazz Ambassadors program. Partnering with local universities, this initiative grants young music students an opportunity to perform abroad and serve as ambassadors for the city during festivals and music events. The Jazz Museum also proudly supports music education facilities to provide art and music supplies to underserved student populations locally and abroad. Partnering with local culture bearers, they have developed educational programs that bring New Orleans traditions like second line footwork demonstrations to global communities. In exchange, audiences and artists from all over the world are invited to visit New Orleans and showcase their own unique traditions.

In recognition of the importance of New Orleans' deeply rooted culinary culture, the Jazz International program has developed a partnership with Dillard University’s Ray Charles Program in African American Material Culture, whose mission is to research, document, disseminate, preserve and celebrate African-American culture and foodways in the South. As part of the Jazz International mission, they offer lectures and demonstrations on New Orleans traditional cuisine for international audiences, highlighting the process of Creolization of the various cultural influences that converged in New Orleans over the course of three centuries.

Through the Jazz International initiative, the Jazz Museum was able to develop traveling versions of their exhibits featuring significant artifacts from the Museum’s extensive collections. Several of these exhibits are currently in international circulation in countries like France, Serbia and the Dominican Republic. Jazz International also supports cultural exchange in the form of archival materials with the goal of finding historical connections between New Orleans and places of commonality. In this exchange, the Museum partners with and conducts research in international archives. Through the New Orleans Jazz Museum’s online collections, Jazz International offers free and open access to researchers worldwide.
